RedZee.com is an visual search engine, with a very attractive and alternative interface of it’s search results.  Instead of presenting it’s visitors with a list of web sites, RedZee provides an arching scroll feature that can be dragged using mouse inputs.

The one word I would probably describe this site, would be character… literally. The first thing you notice when you visit the homepage, is very large flash animation of a Red Zebra character.  Hence the name “red zee”.

While it does provide you with a very attractive and enjoyable interface, i did find a few quirks with the search results and usability that might present challenges for some visitors and will detail those in the following paragraphs. More »

You all remember Lycos don’t you?  I do… but if you’re like me, you probably haven’t used it since gas was only $1per gallon and you still accessed the internet with 56K modem.  Now, Lycos is trying a new approach to search with the Beta release of lyGO.com - A visual search engine.

The site is still in beta mode, but appears to be a promising addition to the rapidly growing visual search field.  While the visual search field is rather crowded with the likes of SearchMe.com, MiddleSpot.com, and other various search engines, lyGo.com does have an advantage over the competition by having one of the oldest, and most experienced search engines on the market.

Picitup.com is a very fast and functional image search tool for filtering pictures based on content.  Picitup’s search engine indexes a few major image repositories, then provides you with tools to filter your results based on category, color, shape and layout.

Most major image search engines will provide you with a few ways to filter your results, but these are normally left to image size and maybe orientation.  Picitup combines the indexing power of major image search engines and image repositories, then takes that service one step further by allowing you to fine tune your results. Facesaerch.com (yes, it’s actually spelled that way) is a fun image search engine for faces.  This application really doesn’t have any useful purpose, except for a fun little time waster. But… it’s a Saturday morning, so I thought I would include something a little less serious and more fun.

Facesaerch is a very simple search that queries the Google Image Search api to gather images of faces based on your entry.  So, let’s say you’re a stalker big fan of Angelina Jolie (see screenhot) you can quickly scroll through a portrait gallery of her pictures.

I’ve reviewed multiple visual search engines to date, each with it’s own approach to user interface and design. However, Middlespot.com is the first visual search engine I’ve see that effectively combines the usefulness of a text search with the functionality of a visual snapshot.

On top of the visual search capabilities, Middlespot also allows it’s users to save different sites and screen shots in groups called “workpads”. Workpads function like a custom search list and a visual gallery that you can note, save, and share with others. These two key features, combined with a well thought out and functional user interface make this a nice site to add to your toolbox (and browser search bar). More »

Like.com (not to be confused with iLike.com) is a visual shopping search engine that allows you to search by style, color, or even details of an item.  Now, you’re probably thinking; Aren’t all shopping sites “visual”… I mean they all have pictures, don’t they?  Yes, that is true… to an extent, but Like.com is something new.

Most - if not all - shopping sites will provide you with a picture of the items in their catalog. However, Like.com takes this one step further and analyzes the item you selected - it’s shape, color, or pattern - and finds similar characteristics in other items. So, if you do a search for “Red, wing tipped shoes”, the site will return a group of shoes that match your criteria.  From there, you can select a shoe that you like, perform a “Visual Search” and Like.com will return additional shoes that look similar to the one you selected. Viewzi.com is a visual search engine with one of the most beautiful, yet complex user interfaces I’ve ever seen.  Instead of taking a machine approach to search results - Where results are presented in the same, list type view - Viewzi provides it’s users 2 dozen or so interpretations or “views” of your query.

Viewzi is a completely new approach to search.  There are many different visual search engines out there including Rollyo and Searchme, however none of them even come close to flexibility Viewzi Provides.

One of the coolest search engines I’ve seen in a while is SearchMe.com.  While it performs different search functions like most other search engines out there; web, images, news, and video. What sets Searchme.com apart from other search engines is the way it displays the search results.  Reminiscant of iTunes’s cool scrolling cover gallery, SearchMe.com uses a horizontal screenshot gallery of the resulting web pages.

In using SearchMe.com, I’ve found several advantages and disadvantages to this approach.  For starters, the advantages;  I actually use searchme.com in my everyday life here at “The List”.  I get 10’s of inclusion requests every day and most are actual, legitimate sites.  However, as with anything on the web, we do get the occasional spam or fishing sites that manage to wiggle past the defences.  SearchMe.com comes in very handy in seeing what is on the other end of that link, without putting my computer, files, and identity at risk.
It also provides a neat way to pre-scan the pages and highlight the search terms present on the site.
