As you may know, Google has a huge number of functions built into their search engine.  From Patent Searches and stock quotes to movie show times and weather reports… they’ve included a lot of hidden features into that little search box.

One of the most useful features - and one I use on a daily basis - is the Dictionary Definition Search.  By simply typing in “define:” prior to your search term, it tells google that you’re trying to locate the definition of a word.  Since this is a very useful feature, I thought I would create a search plugin that automatically adds “define:” in front of the search query for you.  Once this is installed in your browser, simply select “definitions” in your browser search list and type in the word you’re looking for. So, you’re standing at home plate on a baseball field and you’re ready to sing the National Anthem. You open your mouth and out comes; “O! say can you see…. hmm hmmm hmm… early light”.  Don’t let this happen to YOU! Install LyricsFly.com lyric search to your browser and learn those lyrics!

Granted, you’re probably not going to have a computer handy in the middle of a baseball field, but you get the point. LyricsFly.com is a cool little application that allows you to find lyrics of a song by artist, song title, album, or Lyrics.

PressFlip.com is a search engine that learns from your past search preferences to tailor your search results the next time.  There’s two ways that PressFlip can modify it’s algorithms to provide more accurate results.  First, they have a login system so you can save searches for future use.  The next time you search, it takes those saved items to mold your current results.  Second, there’s a little “flip” button next to your search results.  By pressing this button, it tells the system that you’re not interested in this result (hence the name “PressFlip”). At first, it feels a little counter intuitive to tell it that you don’t like results… but, I suppose to provides a way to remove results from the search field.

This is an interesting approach to search and one that’s a little out of left field.  There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding privacy and how much data search engines store.  PressFlip essentially reverses this and deliberately stores the information.  But, by signing up and using this service, you’re essential consenting to it.  So, if this is something that you’re interested in, go for it.

MamaGets.com is a simple search product search and price comparison tool powered by Shopping.com.  The site was built to demonstrate the usage of Shopping.com’s API system.

MamaGets.com doesn’t offer anything new to the comparison site market and essentially provides a stipped down version of Shopping.com’s interface.  The design is verry neat and loads rather quickly on most modern browsers.
