Abbreviations.com or Abbr.com is a site that helps you find abbreviations for some of the more popular words in the English language. So, if you’re looking for what the abbreviation for “Attention” would be, you’ll be able to find that it’s “ATTN”.  Simply type in the word you’re looking for and it will return the abbreviation or any combination thereof.

The site actually has multiple functions in it’s search.  First, you can find the abbreviation for a full word - per the example above - or, you can also find the full word for an abbreviation.  So, let’s say that you have an abbreviation like “MN”… you can find that it’s an abbreviation for “main” (not the state), “Minnesota” (the state), and many more you’ve probably never heard of. On top of word abbreviations, the site also offers several other tools like conversions, expressions, and definitions.

I stumbled upon this site while researching my previous post for Omgili.com.  The site actually offers an emoticon conversion chart, that is interesting to say the least.  There’s a lot of emoticons that I would have never thought of… or even understand if someone sent them to me:

  • !-( Means “Black Eye”
  • #~? Means “Puzzled Smile”
  • ( Y ) Means “butt Cheeks”
    and my personal favorite…
  • ( 8(|) Means Homer :)

Now while this site can be a very useful tool to have in your browser, I did take issue with a few things in the interface.  For example, there is a huge ad section between the search top of the search query and the actual abbreviation translation section.  After my first search query, I seriously thought they had no abbreviations for, well… “Abbreviations”.  Second, the site does seem to handle “like” terms very well.  For instance, the site found 2 abbreviations for “Abbreviations”, but found none for “Abbreviation” (singular).

All in all, it’s a useful site and one that’s fun to play around with, so I thought it was worth the bump here.
