Yokel.com is a shopping search engine and price comparison site that lets you find products found in local stores.

While the search engine seems to focus on the major big-box type stores, it does include a few mom-and-pop sites and stores in the area… but, the lack of truly local stores might be a result of my location (Duluth, MN) than anything else.  It would be interesting to give it a try in some of the more larger metropolitan areas. Like.com (not to be confused with iLike.com) is a visual shopping search engine that allows you to search by style, color, or even details of an item.  Now, you’re probably thinking; Aren’t all shopping sites “visual”… I mean they all have pictures, don’t they?  Yes, that is true… to an extent, but Like.com is something new.

Most - if not all - shopping sites will provide you with a picture of the items in their catalog. However, Like.com takes this one step further and analyzes the item you selected - it’s shape, color, or pattern - and finds similar characteristics in other items. So, if you do a search for “Red, wing tipped shoes”, the site will return a group of shoes that match your criteria.  From there, you can select a shoe that you like, perform a “Visual Search” and Like.com will return additional shoes that look similar to the one you selected. Greenzer.com is the type of site that can help change the attitude that Going Green is difficult or expensive to do. Greenzer.com is a shopping and product search engine where you can search for and sort through items based on their environmental impact.  The products that Greenzer includes in it’s index have to meet several different criteria:

  • 1. It has to be labeled or certified by an organization such as the EPA, Energy Star, or the Forrest Stewardship.
  • 2. Must have Green Attributes like made out of recycled materials or renewable materials such as Bamboo.
  • 3. Some items are included because they are inherently green like rechargeable batteries or reusable water bottles.
  • 4. Be a well known green company in their practices and try to minimize their impact on the environment throughout the whole production and marketing process.

Etsy.com is community of craftspeople and designers creating some very unique and hand made items.  In today’s world of Walmart’s and big box type of stores, it can be hard to find good quality and unique items.  The kind of items you used to find at the mom-and-pop store down the street.  At first glance, you would think that Etsy is just another Ebay clone… but once you take a closer look, you realize that it’s something completely different.  The best way I can put it, is Ebay is like a garage sale and Etsy is like an artist fair.

Now, I’m not knocking Ebay… it’s a great site and a site I use on a regular basis to find items you can’t find in stores.  But, the type of sellers on Etsy are just a breed apart.  Most are actual designers, artists, or craftspeople who actually make thier items instead of just selling them.

thisnext.com is a great community based shopping site, where you can find products based on other people’s recommendations. This a great site for finding some rather unique and interesting gifts, typically oriented towards designer or hard to find items.

One of the key success factors of this site would be the community of contributors involved. I would probably describe them as “cool hunters” or have an early adopter type of personality.  People who are just not happy with the standard item you can find at Walmart.  Case in point is this awesome little SteamPunk style USB drive I found while browsing the site.

There are literally thousands of restaurant review sites out there, many of which have the same “standard” features; reviews, menus, locations, recommendations, etc.  What sets BooRah.com apart from rest is that it searches through blogs, critic review sites, and consumer sites with a patent-pending natural language processing technology to find and summarize the most relevant reviews.  In other words, it reads the vibe on the web about a restaurant and shows you the best summary available.

Now BooRah.com currently has official reviews for a few major cities in the United States.  But, after doing a quick search for “Tacos” in my area (Duluth, Mn) it still returned some decent results; A few chain restaurants and local joints as well.  Basically the same results you’d find in the phone book.

MamaGets.com is a simple search product search and price comparison tool powered by Shopping.com.  The site was built to demonstrate the usage of Shopping.com’s API system.

MamaGets.com doesn’t offer anything new to the comparison site market and essentially provides a stipped down version of Shopping.com’s interface.  The design is verry neat and loads rather quickly on most modern browsers.
