edopter.com is a crowdsourcing project in social trends. Which is another way of saying that the site uses a large group of people to find and predict what will popular next. While the site is mainly oriented towards the early adopter crowd (hence the name “e-dopter”), anyone who’s interested in new and emerging technologies and trends will find this site very useful.

On top of early adopters and people who enjoy being part of the “in-crowd”, this site has a huge potential for marketers, businesses, and bloggers alike.  With it, you’d be able to identify which trends might be coming to a store or browser near you and get a leg up on the competition. More »

As you may know, Google has a huge number of functions built into their search engine.  From Patent Searches and stock quotes to movie show times and weather reports… they’ve included a lot of hidden features into that little search box.

One of the most useful features - and one I use on a daily basis - is the Dictionary Definition Search.  By simply typing in “define:” prior to your search term, it tells google that you’re trying to locate the definition of a word.  Since this is a very useful feature, I thought I would create a search plugin that automatically adds “define:” in front of the search query for you.  Once this is installed in your browser, simply select “definitions” in your browser search list and type in the word you’re looking for. QueryCAT.com is web’s largest database of online FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) amassed into one searchable location. Essentially, QueryCAT scours the web looking for pages and links that contain FAQ’s of all shapes and sizes.  It then takes those pages, determines which elements are the questions and which elements are the answers, then stores them in a database that you can search.

QueryCAT is one of those hidden gems on the web. It’s immensely useful… but not many people have heard about it.  With over 5 million questions and answers in it’s index, you’re bound to find what you’re looking for. More »

Curiosity is something built into everyone.  As kids, we tear apart everything we can get our hands on to find the answer to a simple question; How does this work?  Now, unless you’re a 2yr old, you’re probably not going to tear apart your brand new DVD player to figure out how it works.  Even if you do, unless you’re an electrical engineer or some type of uber-geek, you’re probably not going to understand what the hell you’re looking at. To answer these questions, there’s a better way… HowStuffWorks.com.

HowStuffWorks is a very large site of detailed articles explaining how everything from light bulbs to rocket engines work. The sheer amount of data available on the site can be a little daunting.  Luckily, the internal search application for Howstuffworks.com is enhanced by Google, so it’s backed with one of the best search technologies available.  The site is also categorized by sections including auto, computers, communications, etc. So if you’re interested in an overall topic, or just looking to pass the time, you can browse by category.

Instructables.com provides user contributed instructions for making gadgets and gizmos out of almost anything you can find around the house or at the local RadioShack.  The site has a extensive collection of projects ranging from food recipes to high tech tools and gadgets.

One of the definite advantages of the site is the step-by-step instructions available to visitors.  Most projects will typically include a list of materials needed along with construction photos that walk you through the process.  Now I say “most” because after all, it is a user contributed site, so some projects have better instructions than others. The site does have a good rating system, so you can typically weed out the good from the bad.

GroupRecipes.com is a social network for cooks or “foodies” as they are called on the site.  Users can upload and share their recipes with others, find recipes that others have made, and also suggest alterations and comment on popular recipes.

Cooking and more specifically recipes are such a social medium in of itself… recipes are handed down from generation to generation and shared among friends.  So, it’s a natural step to have a user contributed recipe site like GroupRecipes.com.

Essentially, the name says it all… Ask a question and the service will allow 500 people to answer the question before it’s complete.  Since most of the posts are made public, it can be used as a public opinion poll in real time.  So, you can see answers to questions as they come in and also see the location from where they were voting from.

I have to admit, this is one of my favorite time wasting sites on the web right now.  Granted, it can be used for some very valuable information and polling, but you can also spend hours just sitting there searching for different questions and watching the answers come in.
