Ask.com is one of the web’s most popular alternative search engines and an alternative to the major search engine players such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN.

The search results are rather impressive and compete on a level playing field with major search engines.  However, Ask.com does provide some advanced and unique features only found on this site.

The following paragraphs detail some of the unique features and my impressions of the interface.

Gmail is one of the most popular email applications on the planet.  It’s storage, flexibility, and cost (or lack-there-of) make it a very attractive option in a very crowded field.

This search plugin is a little different than others we’ve reviewed and made available at The List.  For starters, you need a Google or Gmail account to use it.  Second, you need to be logged in to the system to actually see the results.  But, if you’re like me, you check that little “Remember me on this computer.” box and stay logged in.  So, if you’re a heavy gmail user, this shouldn’t be an issue. You all remember Lycos don’t you?  I do… but if you’re like me, you probably haven’t used it since gas was only $1per gallon and you still accessed the internet with 56K modem.  Now, Lycos is trying a new approach to search with the Beta release of lyGO.com - A visual search engine.

The site is still in beta mode, but appears to be a promising addition to the rapidly growing visual search field.  While the visual search field is rather crowded with the likes of SearchMe.com, MiddleSpot.com, and other various search engines, lyGo.com does have an advantage over the competition by having one of the oldest, and most experienced search engines on the market.

As you may know, Google has a huge number of functions built into their search engine.  From Patent Searches and stock quotes to movie show times and weather reports… they’ve included a lot of hidden features into that little search box.

One of the most useful features - and one I use on a daily basis - is the Dictionary Definition Search.  By simply typing in “define:” prior to your search term, it tells google that you’re trying to locate the definition of a word.  Since this is a very useful feature, I thought I would create a search plugin that automatically adds “define:” in front of the search query for you.  Once this is installed in your browser, simply select “definitions” in your browser search list and type in the word you’re looking for. Flickr.com is by far one of the most popular and widely used photo sharing sites on the web today.  The site allows users to store, edit, share, print, and even market your photos online.  With well over 2 billion photos online, your photo search is bound to turn up something good.

Originally launched in February 2004 and later acquired by Yahoo! in March of 2005, Flickr is known as one of the first “Web 2.0″ applications.  The site is a pioneer in the field of user contributed content and community that is now a standard with most web applications. More »

Ok, I’ll have to admit that I’m not a big fan of using a command prompt and typically use it as a last resort.  But, I am absolutely in LOVE with this interface!  Goosh.org is a Google CSE, but with a command prompt type of interface. The actual nuts and bolts of the system are nothing new. You can perform all the standard Google search functions like search the web, video, blogs, and wikipedia. But What sets it apart is it’s very unique and very creative interface.

I’ve been trying to put my finger on why I like using this interface so much.  There’s no real advantage to using Goosh over the “normal” Google site except for a very creative and unique interface.  But, then again I suppose it’s probably the same reason people restore and drive old cars or buy Nixie Clocks.  It reminds me of the good old days of MS-DOS, Pine email clients, and storing pixel-by-pixel created images on 5-1/4″ floppy disks.

So, you’re trying to find something on Google and it returns thousands of results… based on relevancy.  But, let’s say you’re trying to find the most recent pages added to web instead of just by relevancy?  Blabline.com is a simple tool that does just that.  It sorts web searches based on how recent they are (and how relevant as well).  Blabline.com currently will search through the web, videos, podcasts, torrents, and wikipedia.

The site makes an excellent use of Google’s Custom Search Engine, so the results are about as reliable as they come.  Essentially they’re taking Google’s search result and sorting the results based on recency of the content.  It’s a very clean and easy to use site, reminiscent of Google’s main search page.
