Addictomatic is a topic aggregation site similar to Alltop.com or popurls.com in that it aggregates all the best content on the web into one location.  The main difference between Addict-o-matic and the other aggregation sites, is it’s focus on search and personalization.

While Addictomatic.com does provide you with a few canned or popular topics on it’s homepage, the real strength of this little application comes from it’s search capabilities.  Even though it doesn’t perform the search results as I expected, it’s still a nice addition to the genre.  Read further for a review of my experience and check out the site to decide for yourself. When you say “Online Video” the first thing most people think of is YouTube.  However, if you’re looking for something a little sleeker, a little sexier, and with more options, you might want to check out Vimeo.com

There are several things that seperate Vimeo from other video services out there.  Vimeo has all the standard features that come with most hosted video services; It’s free, embeddable players, and it has the ability to allow users to comment on your video.  But, that’s where a lot of the similarities end.

First, there’s an HD video channel, dedicated strictly to videos in 1280×720.  This offers a considerable quality improvement over the standard 400 odd pixel videos available on YouTube. More »

Essentially, the name says it all… Ask a question and the service will allow 500 people to answer the question before it’s complete.  Since most of the posts are made public, it can be used as a public opinion poll in real time.  So, you can see answers to questions as they come in and also see the location from where they were voting from.

I have to admit, this is one of my favorite time wasting sites on the web right now.  Granted, it can be used for some very valuable information and polling, but you can also spend hours just sitting there searching for different questions and watching the answers come in.

Ok, I’ll have to admit that I’m not a big fan of using a command prompt and typically use it as a last resort.  But, I am absolutely in LOVE with this interface!  Goosh.org is a Google CSE, but with a command prompt type of interface. The actual nuts and bolts of the system are nothing new. You can perform all the standard Google search functions like search the web, video, blogs, and wikipedia. But What sets it apart is it’s very unique and very creative interface.

I’ve been trying to put my finger on why I like using this interface so much.  There’s no real advantage to using Goosh over the “normal” Google site except for a very creative and unique interface.  But, then again I suppose it’s probably the same reason people restore and drive old cars or buy Nixie Clocks.  It reminds me of the good old days of MS-DOS, Pine email clients, and storing pixel-by-pixel created images on 5-1/4″ floppy disks.

TinyApps.org is a simple directory filled with hundreds, if not thousands of unique, small, and hard to find applications.  As the name says, Tinyapps.org only contains software with a small footprint and is less than 1.44mb in size.  For any of you over the age of say 25, you’ll remember that 1.44mb is the size of the small hard cased floppy disks.  Those floppy disks are now largely obsolete, but I like that they kept that criteria as it fits the circa 1994 design of the site.

Other requirements of applications listed in the directory are they must be Freeware or OpenSource and not malice or adware. There are a few shareware applications, but they only offer them if there isn’t a freeware version available.

SearchIcon.net - Search for web and desktop icons

SearchIcon.net does just that… Search for different icons available for download. This is an extremely useful site for any web designer or developer looking for that hard to find icon. Simply do a search for type of icon your looking for, such as “Email” and it will return the results in a gallery of the matching icons.

Since this site seems to be in Beta Mode, there are a few bugs I’ve found through the interface.  First, there are two links above the icons that don’t work; Tags and License.  Both of these would be extremely useful when creating a proffessional web site.  The tags would be a nice feature to find related icons. Secondly, the License link would also be useful since you want to make sure that you’re not using a rights protected icon. There is also an issue with the speed.  The service seems to be a little slow, so the search can take some time if the icon you’re looking for isn’t on the first results page.
