Blogs.com - A New Blog Search Engine By Six Apart.
Blogs.com is a new blog search engine by Six Apart… the makers of the popular hosted blog service TypePad.
The site doesn’t offer much new in the sense of search capabilities (besides a very easy to remember name), but it does provide some interesting editorial articles about the blogging community and spotlight blogs you can browse through.
The Results
As I mentioned above, the search capability on Blogs.com is nothing to special and significant. You can expect pretty much the same results as you would find on Technorati or Google Blog Search.
One high point I’d like to point out is the extremely well designed and easy to read user interface. Comparing it to the jumble of information on extremely difficult to read - and use - Technorati search results pages, Blogs.com is a definite much needed change of pace.
The search results also provide an interesting feature, in that you can subscribe to RSS feed of the blogs on the search results page. This is a small feature, but definitely a useful one.
Top 10 Lists
Another key feature I’d like to point out, is the focus of a section on Top 10 Lists.
If you’re a common reader of social bookmarking or news sites such as Digg.com, delicious.com, or StumbleUpon.com… top 10 lists very commonly make it to the front page.
Blogs.com takes a new approach and actually categorizes these pages and presents them to you for your browsing enjoyment.
A Conflict of Interest?
One question that I’ve been tossing around about this site is it’s association and relationship to Six Apart.
The main concern is that blogs.com would provide a preference to users of their TypePad or Movable Type applications and services.
On the other hand, Google - by far the most popular search engine around - also owns Blogger.com and doesn’t appear to give preference to their blogs.
Conclusion
So, in closing, Blogs.com is a nice and easy to use blog search engine. It’s easier to use than Technorati and provides more information than Google Blog Search… just not as big (for now). I definately recommend you add them to your search box and give them a try.
