Whoishostingthis.com - Find Out Where They Host
Whoishostingthis.com is an extremely simple site that serves one purpose, and one purpose only… to tell you who is hosting a web site. By typing in a web url or web site into the search field, you’re returned with the hosting company of that web site. That’s it. So, you may be asking yourself; Why would this be useful? Well, it probably isn’t that useful, but it is a fun little toy to play around with.
Besides the hosting search, there are a few other links that do provide some interesting information. In particular, the new RockStart Bloggers hosting page that tells you the hosting providers of the top 100 blogs. (according to technorati)
Indirectly Useful
Besides being a good time waster and a curiosity engine, the site does provide some indirect information that can be useful. For example, if you’re looking for a new hosting provider, it can be very difficult to find a good and unbiased review of hosting providers. Hell, “hosting provider review” returns 1.4 Million results in a cursory Google search… of which 90% are probably ads or referral sites.
What Whoishostingthis.com can provide, is a way for you to do a search for some of your favorite and trusted sites, find out where they host, and use that as a basis for comparison. Granted, you can’t see reviews, or anything of that nature… but, it’s at least a start.
Top Dawgs
Another interesting page on this site is the Top Hosting Page. On this page, the site will return two different elements… 1. The top returned hosting providers 2. The top domain names searched. This provides some interesting information about what the most common hosting providers are. It would be nice however to find out how many search results came back with each one host to get a better guage on the actual popularity.
As I said above, this site doesn’t provide anything that can be extremely useful in your everyday browsing or web work, but it is a nice little curiosity tool. They also mentioned a “sale” and “new owners” on their blog, so I’m not sure if this site has changed ownerships or not. Will be interesting to track this in the future.
p.s. If anyone knows about the sale or who bought the the site, let me know.
UPDATE: I recieved an email from Richard Kershaw with QualityNonsense LTD - the new owners of the site. Since the post went live, it looks like they’ve already made a few minor changes, including a new logo (which they desperately needed). I’ll revisit this post as they make improvements and changes.
