TinySong.com is the search extension of the music sharing service Grooveshark.com.  The service allows you to search for a song or artist, then provides you with a link so you can listen to the song yourself or pass it along to your friends.

The interesting part about this TinySong and Grooveshark is that you can listed to the song in it’s entirety online.  Many similar sites will offer this same service - but for a fee.  Services like Rhapsody which charges a monthly fee or iTunes that requires you to pay on a per-song basis.

Share Anywhere

The name “tinysong” is derived from the types of links that it provides.  Similar to URL shortening services such as TinyURL.com or Snurl.com, the application takes what would be a long url and creates a shortcut link.  Here’s an example:

As you can see from above, both links take you to the same place. However, the TinySong URL is short enough to be shared via SMS applications like Twitter or Plurk.

After the Link

So now that you’ve searched for a song and created a link, once you or someone you shared it with clicks on that link, you’re brought to GrooveShark Lite.

GrooveShark Lite is essentially an online music player that provides you with all the tools you would find on any music player.  On top of the standard play, stop, Fast Forward, and Rewind capabilities, you’re also given additional options to explore for more music.

The site allows you to download the song (for a fee), add it to a playlist, or discover similar songs.

The only issue I take with this application is the extra step to play the song.  It would be nice to see the search results and short links automatically embeded on GrooveShark Lite. But I suppose if you’re trying to find multiple songs in one sitting, it does cut down on the load time.

AutoPlay

AutoPlay is a new feature by Grooveshark that automatically creates a playlist of similar music that you might like.  The feature is actually pretty simple.  Once you search for a song and find one that you like, simply click on the autoplay button in the music controls and Grooveshark will line up a playlist for you.

I played around with a few songs that I like, and it brought back some rather impressive results.  After doing a search for a song by Our Lady Peace (A Canadian alternative band), the autoplay feature suggested I listen to Angels and Airwaves, Sum 41, and a few other similar artists.  I actually own albums from both these artists, so the autoplay “guess” was pretty accurate.

Verdict

This is a really novel idea to listening to music.  Hopefully they’ll be able to survive where a lot of other online music applications are starting to studder.  It’s a great way to explore and listen to music… the free and legal way. (how it should be?)
