Google Tools: Gmail Search - Search Your Inbox From Your Browser.
Gmail is one of the most popular email applications on the planet. It’s storage, flexibility, and cost (or lack-there-of) make it a very attractive option in a very crowded field.
This search plugin is a little different than others we’ve reviewed and made available at The List. For starters, you need a Google or Gmail account to use it. Second, you need to be logged in to the system to actually see the results. But, if you’re like me, you check that little “Remember me on this computer.” box and stay logged in. So, if you’re a heavy gmail user, this shouldn’t be an issue.
Don’t file… archive
Now, we’re all familiar with folders when it comes to storing information. Whether it be physical copies in a filing cabinet or the folder structure built into you’re hard drive, it’s a well known concept.
Gmail however has done away with the folders concept all together. Instead Gmail uses a system of stars, labels, and archive (Oh My!). Sound confusing? Well, at first it is becuase it’s different than the status quo. However, once you start using it, you’ll find that it’s a very natural way to organize.
First, there’s the archive. Like I said before, instead of storing emails in folders, you simple remove it from the inbox and store it in an all-in-one archive. So, how do you find emails beyond there? Simple… it’s what Google does best; Search. The search feature that’s built in to gmail allows you to search your entire account for keywords. This is the main reason why we’ve included the search capability here.
Stars? Yeah, stars. Essentially it works to flag items that you think are important. Think of it as a flagging system in Outlook, but much simpler. Instead of adding red, green, blue, or other flags… simply star it as something you like to make it stand out from the rest.
Finally, labels are another way to organize your information. You can add labels to different emails manually or based on certain criteria. So, let’s say you have an email that’s from you boss, you can add a rule that will automatically label it as “boss” (or something less nice if you hate the person). This allows you to organize emails based on those labels.
BIG
Storage and attachment size is another big draw to creating a gmail account. At the time of writing, Gmail offers over 5GB of storage space and 20MB attachment sizes. This far surpasses other accounts that may only offer 1mb attachments and very minimal storage space.
At the same time, this is constantly growing. Gmail even has a ticker on their homepage that illustrates how quickly it’s growing.
Additional Accounts
If you’re like me, you have tons of different email addresses… all used for different purposes. For Addoursearch.com alone, I have over 5 email for contact forms, advertising inquiries, personal contacts, etc, etc.
Gmail allows you to add those accounts and consolidate them all into one location. Basically it acts like an online pop3 client similar to Apple’s Mail Program or Microsoft’s Outlook Express.
Conclusion
Google has many many more features and too many to list here. But, if you don’t have a gmail account, get one and then add this search to your browser.
