Tools, Tools, Tools… this week was all about tools.
2 I’d like to highlight are CrunchBase and QuarkBase (close to the same name, but no business relationship).  CrunchBase is a user contributed Tech Company and Startup Directory from the TechCrunch network of sites.  QuarkBase is on the other end of the spectrum and uses an automated approach to it’s site.  Essentially it’s a mashup of various API’s, including one from Crunchbase. QuarkBase is a one stop shop to find out all sorts of information about a web site.  It’s really a useful little site that allows you to find contact info, page views, social bookmark links… really anything you would like about a web site.

I can’t tell you how useful a find like this is - especially for a blog writer like me - to find all the pertinent information about a site in one location.  So, if you’re a web worker - or just the curious type - this is a good one to have in your search bar toolbox. More »

CrunchBase.com - A Startup and Tech Company Directory

So, where do you go to find information about a company or web site? Sure, there’s Whois and Alexa (both services we provide links to on this site). However, if you’re looking for more detailed information about a company and not just statistical data, let me introduce you to CrunchBase.com

Crunchbase is a free tech company database and is part of the TechCrunch network of sites (hence the name). The site not only provides visitors with a way to search for and discover detailed information about a startups and tech companies, but it also provides a resource to entrepreurs and company owners to list their sites and organizations for free. Daylife.com - A New Spin in the News Aggregation Genre.

DayLife.com is an interesting new addition to a news aggregation site.  Daylife consolidates news stories and information from multiple sources across the web and organizes it into a very clean and easy to use interface.

On top of being an online destination for news, one feature that sets this site apart from other sites in this field is their “daypi” (DayLife API) that allows publishers and site owners to include the sections and news stories directly on their site.   However, since this blog is all about adding the search to your browser, the following paragraphs will focus primarily on the online interface and search capabilities. Google Tools: Gmail Search - Search Your Inbox From Your Browser.

Gmail is one of the most popular email applications on the planet.  It’s storage, flexibility, and cost (or lack-there-of) make it a very attractive option in a very crowded field.

This search plugin is a little different than others we’ve reviewed and made available at The List.  For starters, you need a Google or Gmail account to use it.  Second, you need to be logged in to the system to actually see the results.  But, if you’re like me, you check that little “Remember me on this computer.” box and stay logged in.  So, if you’re a heavy gmail user, this shouldn’t be an issue. Now, I realize it’s actually well… Monday at this point.  However, we’ve had a busy week here at Add Our Search.  First and foremost, we’ve launched Search Icon support for our widget service and launched the capability for the blog this weekend.  You may have noticed now when you add one of the search plugins to your browser from the blog, an icon is added along with the name.  We’re still working on perfecting the auto-discovery feature, so it may not work on ALL of the search plugins, but it’s a start.

lyGO.com - Visual Search Engine by Lycos.

You all remember Lycos don’t you?  I do… but if you’re like me, you probably haven’t used it since gas was only $1per gallon and you still accessed the internet with 56K modem.  Now, Lycos is trying a new approach to search with the Beta release of lyGO.com - A visual search engine.

The site is still in beta mode, but appears to be a promising addition to the rapidly growing visual search field.  While the visual search field is rather crowded with the likes of SearchMe.com, MiddleSpot.com, and other various search engines, lyGo.com does have an advantage over the competition by having one of the oldest, and most experienced search engines on the market.

Whoishostingthis.com - Find Out Where They Host

Whoishostingthis.com is an extremely simple site that serves one purpose, and one purpose only… to tell you who is hosting a web site.   By typing in a web url or web site into the search field, you’re returned with the hosting company of that web site.  That’s it. So, you may be asking yourself; Why would this be useful?  Well, it probably isn’t that useful, but it is a fun little toy to play around with.

Besides the hosting search, there are a few other links that do provide some interesting information.  In particular, the new RockStart Bloggers hosting page that tells you the hosting providers of the top 100 blogs. (according to technorati) More »

WeGame.com - Youtube for Video Games

Wegame.com is an interesting and fun site that allows you to watch, record, and upload videos of your game play. Wegame is similar to other video sites in which users can upload videos for other visitors to watch, rate, and comment on.

Besides user submitted videos of game play, the site also allows game producers to upload their latest trailers of new and upcoming games. Now, as I’ve said before in previous posts… I’m not a hard core gamer. However, this site can be rather addictive and a fun way to pass the time. More »
