Curiosity is something built into everyone.  As kids, we tear apart everything we can get our hands on to find the answer to a simple question; How does this work?  Now, unless you’re a 2yr old, you’re probably not going to tear apart your brand new DVD player to figure out how it works.  Even if you do, unless you’re an electrical engineer or some type of uber-geek, you’re probably not going to understand what the hell you’re looking at. To answer these questions, there’s a better way… HowStuffWorks.com.

HowStuffWorks is a very large site of detailed articles explaining how everything from light bulbs to rocket engines work. The sheer amount of data available on the site can be a little daunting.  Luckily, the internal search application for Howstuffworks.com is enhanced by Google, so it’s backed with one of the best search technologies available.  The site is also categorized by sections including auto, computers, communications, etc. So if you’re interested in an overall topic, or just looking to pass the time, you can browse by category.

The one complaint I would have is the ad placement on the site.  I did a search for “Microwave Oven” and the Google text ads above the search results took up over half the screen on my laptop.  In order to actually see the search results I had to scroll down on the page.  Not the best UI design, but I suppose everyone has to make money.
