When a friend asks you about the move you saw last night, do you go into a long dissertation on the development of the characters, the plot lines, or the imagery?  Unless you’re a film major… probably not.  Typically you have a quick answer like, “It was awesome!” or “It sucked, it was way to long and boring”.  So, why spend time reading through lengthy reviews from some stuffy, elitist critic?  Try Blippr.com instead.

Blippr is a social review site that allows it’s users to rate movies, music, books, and games in 160 characters or less. Given the recent popularity of short messaging services - or “lifecasting” applications like Twitter and Plurk - Blippr has taken that concept and molded it into a nice little review site.

One of advantages of the site is that you can get a feeling for what a movie, book, or game is going to be like from many different people in a very short period of time.  The best part about it… they’re normal people.  Well, maybe some of them are a little odd, but you get the idea.  Since the site only allows people to enter 160 characters in their reviews, it forces them to get to the point.

Following true to the short message format, Blippr uses an emoticon rating system instead stars or check marks:

  • :D Love it
  • :) Like it
  • :| Whatever
  • :( Dislike it

The Blippr interface is very user friendly and light-hearted, with an extensive use of AJAX and CSS styles.  There’s also options to broadcast your “blips” to different applications such as FriendFeed, Facebook, and Twitter; But at the time of writing it appears to be only be a one way communication.  What would be nice is if they added features similar to Twitter, where you could use twitter to create blips or send blips via SMS.  This would add an extra dynamic to the service and allow people to rate things as they are watching a premier, reading a book, or attending a show.

They do offer an API, so if anyone is out there with the time and the skills, have at it and let me know about it.  I think it’s only a matter of time before this one goes main stream.

Glad you’re liking it so far! We very definitely want two-way communication with twitter, but we’re struggling to figure out how to best let people blip from twitter. It’s a pretty complex problem, but one we very much want to solve! :)
